AM-A was approached by a theatre company that has a temporary performance space it moves around Victorian and New South Wales sites. The issue was that the main roof beam was dangerously heavy and difficult to install requiring several people lift it into place.
Using 3D CAD and Finite element analysis software AM-A was able to design a custom fabricated aluminium beam that was light enough for two people to lift into place. This was achieved by removing material were it is not adding stiffness or strength. Removing this material can be done safely when a detailed FEA analysis captures all the local stresses.

As we already had the 3D model we thought it might be interesting to get 3D print done of the component. Being able to touch, feel and manipulate a 1:25 scale prototype was quite interesting. The prototype really highlighted the stiffness in the direction of the applied load.
I think having a tactile prototype would be useful for Architects in some specific projects to get a better feel of how the structure will appear in real life.
